The trim tag became a removal

A notice that used to say trim can come back as remove. Then the city often wants the stump ground and the specimen they name in the ground to pass inspection.

Last season it said trim. The new notice says remove.

The call sounds the same every time. The notice was on the tree last season. It said trim. Nobody booked it. The new notice says remove.

That is not a surprise species. It is time. A clearance prune was a crew day. A removal tag is the tree, the stump, and often a replacement the city already picked.

Trim names a size. Remove often names the stump and the specimen.

What the notice says now

Read the paper before anyone starts a saw. It is one or the other.

If it still says trim, it names a circumference or a size the canopy has to come down to. That number is the inspection. A heavier “while we’re here” cut is not what they wrote, and a lighter one will not pass either.

If it says remove, the red NOTICE means the tree comes out. The city often requires the stump ground and a new tree planted in that spot. When planting is required, they name the specimen. You plant that tree. A different one from the nursery will not pass inspection, even if it would have been a fine choice for the yard.

South Bay cities watch street trees, sidewalks, and trees an ordinance treats as protected. In San Jose, street trees and designated heritage trees often need city approval before removal. Many private-yard trees do not. We flag when a permit may apply — you confirm with the city. We do not pull permits for you unless that is scoped in writing.

A trim size can still be a prune. A removal notice is not a heavier haircut.

What you can still save

A sound tree with a trim size on the notice can still be a prune. Photograph the tag, the measurement they wrote, the trunk, and the full canopy from the street. That is a trim, not a takedown.

Once the notice says remove, do not top it to “make it smaller” and hope the city changes its mind. Send the removal notice, the specimen name if they listed one, and photos of access. We quote tree removal, stump grinding, and the planting they specified. Chips left in the hole will not pass as a planted tree.

This shows up on a house in San Jose, an HOA parkway, and a ranch gate the same way. The address and the notice are what change the quote, not a story about whose tree it was.
