The weight is already down. Most of these showed themselves the week before.
The morning after, the question is not “how did this happen.” The weight is on the house, the car, the fence line, or the fairway. People stay out from under it. Then you look at what was already visible.
People out from under it. Photos from the ground. Call if it is on a structure.
What to do now
- Keep people and animals out from under hung-up wood. A tree that looks finished moving often is not.
- If a wire is in it, stay back and call the utility. We do not cut a tree that is holding a live line.
- Do not climb it and do not start a saw from a ladder to “take the pressure off.”
- From the ground, if you can do it safely, photograph the whole tree, where it is resting, and the base. Insurance will want those photos before the brush is gone. We are not your adjuster. We get the weight off.
Call 408-439-6975 when it is on a structure or still opening. That is emergency tree service. A limb you meant to trim last month, and that is now on the lawn with nobody under it, can be a scheduled cleanup. Say which one it is.
Stump grinding waits until the wood is off the roof and the site is stable. A root plate that tipped up is not the same grind as a flush stump. Say so in the photos.
Deadwood, a new lean, wet bark on an oak, or a tag still on the trunk.
What was already there
The week before, most of these were not a secret.
- Deadwood thick enough to hurt a roof, a car, or a cart path. Twigs are normal. A bare limb the size of your arm over a target is not.
- A lean that was new, or a crack and heaved soil on the tension side.
- A cavity or soft wood at the base, with the lean aimed at the house, the barn, or the tee.
- A lawn sprinkler soaking the trunk of an oak that had looked “fine” for years. Wet bark at the flare is how a lot of those fail in the first real wind.
- A city tag still on the trunk. The storm does not pause the notice.
On a course, tell us the hole and whether carts can still reach it. On a ranch, walk the rest of the row after the one tree is down, not only the trunk on the shop. On a house, the roof comes first.
If the tree was a street tree or a protected tree, the failure does not erase the rule. We flag when a permit may apply — you confirm with the city. We do not pull permits unless that is scoped in writing. Stabilizing the site is still the first call.
Start Easy Estimate if the tree is threatening and still standing. If it is already on the structure, call.
